BASEBALL
UNLV staff to offer training camp
The 2005 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, Buddy Gouldsmith, and his UNLV staff will be holding both a hitting and position camp at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on the campus of UNLV.
The Holiday Hitting Camp, for players ages 7-18, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 27-28 and costs $150. This two-day camp for hitters will stress the mechanics, mental approach and fundamentals of hitting.
The Holiday Position Camp also is for players ages 7-18 and is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 29. It costs $100. This one-day camp is for pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. Proper mechanics, strategy and numerous repetitions will be demonstrated, discussed and implemented.

Club team is seeking players
The Las Vegas Hawks, a baseball club team of players age 10 and under, is interested in finding new players who would like to play competitive baseball while learning in a positive and supportive environment.

Gorman, Centennial in USA Today polls
Bishop Gorman High School's boys basketball team, the defending Class 4A champions, were ranked ninth in the Western Region in USA Today's first high school poll of the year.
Four-time defending 4A girls champs Centennial was ranked 24th in the nation in the first Super 25 rankings by the newspaper, and seventh in the Western Region.
YMCA plans holiday event for Dec. 29-30
The YMCA invites Clark County School District and local private school eighth-grade basketball teams to participate in the YMCA Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament, set for Dec. 29-30.
Participation is limited to the first eight teams in the boys and girls divisions. Club teams are not eligible to participate.
All teams are guaranteed three games, with the first-place division winners receiving trophies. Registration is $300 per team, which includes referee fees.
Games will be played at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane; Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive; and at Faith Lutheran Junior High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way. Entrance fees for spectators are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for children under 2.

Holiday camp set for Durango Hills YMCA
The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, will hold a holiday basketball camp for boys and girls ages 6-12. Two sessions will be offered, from Monday to Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-30.
The camp will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The cost is $55 per child.

FENCING
Junior Olympic qualifier is coming
On Saturday, the Fencing Academy at 1400 N. Rampart Blvd. in the Las Vegas Sports Park will host the Nevada division qualifying event for the Junior Olympic Championships, which are scheduled to be held in February in Hartford, Conn.
The qualifying event will be held for all three weapons: epee, foil and sabre.
Nevada fencers born between the years 1986 and 1992 are eligible to compete in their respective categories, cadet (under 17) and junior (under 20).
A late registration fee of $40 applies as the Dec. 3 sign-up date has passed. There also is a $10 event fee.

FLAG FOOTBALL
Raiders win Southwest Regional
The Raiders won the 10- 11-year-old age group of the NFL Flag Football's Southwest Regional Tournament held Nov. 5 at the Surprise Recreation Campus in Surprise, Ariz., and advanced to the national championships in Orlando in their age group.
Teams from Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah as well as Nevada participated in this daylong round-robin tournament.
The team was directed by head coach Jeff Schertzer and assistant coach Roy Miller and included co-captains Corey Iwata and Sean Miller, along with Cody Iwata, Sam Studahur, Scott Starr, Larry Wickett, Ridge Jones, Mike Lichtenstein, Quintin Kohurst and Taylor Brown.
FOOTBALL
LV makes polls; Gaines honored
Las Vegas, which shut out Hug High School (12-2), 23-0 in the state championship game on Dec. 3 at Mackay Stadium in Reno, was ranked 10th in the Western Region in the USA Today's regional rankings.
The Wildcats, under the direction of coach Chris Faircloth, finished with a 14-1 record, and also were ranked 10th in the Tony Poll, featured at www.tonybianco.com.
Also, Las Vegas High School safety Jashaad Gaines was named the 2005 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year.
Faith's Breeden Wendy's winner
Faith Lutheran High School's Chad Breeden was named the Wendy's High School Heisman winner for the state of Nevada.
Breeden was a member of the Crusaders' Class 3A state championship basketball team, was named a second-team, All-Southern League offensive tackle this fall for Faith Lutheran's football team, and participated in track as a thrower.
Breeden also is a national merit scholarship semifinalist.
Cherry Davis from Silver Stage High School was Nevada's female winner. Breeden and Davis join two winners from each state and the District of Columbia who are still eligible to be among 12 national finalists.
The two national winners will be named later this month.

LV chapter of kids' charity awards funds
The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities held its annual Grant Distribution and Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Nov. 29.
The Las Vegas Chapter granted $275,000 to 67 local children's charities at the ceremony, an increase of 16 groups from 2004. Guests included Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and Secretary of State Dean Heller.
The evening's festivities included holiday vocal selections by Malia Civetz, and performances by the Mariachi Band from J.D. Smith Middle School and Culture Shock Las Vegas dance troupe.
The list of 67 recipients included: Amerindian, Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada; Greater Las Vegas After-School All-Stars; I Have a Dream Foundation; Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation; Second Chance Foundation; Las Vegas Sun Summer Camp; St. Jude's Ranch for Children; Opportunity Village; and Shade Tree.
RECREATION
City to offer a variety of options
The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will be offering dozens of classes and activities at its community centers and schools.
Options include sports leagues and exercise options and family fun events, after-school programs, educational workshops and leisure activities for all ages. Registration for the six-week winter 2006 session will be open through Jan. 6, for classes from Jan. 9-Feb. 18.

SOFTBALL
SNFA Southeast looking for players
The Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southeast softball league, sister league to the SNFA Southwest league, is looking for girls ages 4-14 who want to play competitive softball. Games will be played at Desert Bloom, Silvestri Middle School and West Flamingo fields.
SNFA Southeast offers two divisions of play -- a B Division for more experienced, competitive players, and a C Division for the new instructional player or the experienced player who wants to just have fun.
An early sign-up, with a $10 discount, will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Round Table Pizza, 8878 S. Eastern Ave. The fee is based on the division played, not the player's age.
The fee for the 6-and-under and 8-and-under divisions is $65, while the cost for the 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under divisions is $90. There is a $5 sibling discount. Fees include player uniform, a wooden plaque, player photo package and a trophy.
Practice begins in February, league games begin in March and the season concludes in May.
A birth certificate is required to register. In-person registration is required for uniform sizing.

SNFA Southwest to hold registration
Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southwest Spring 2006 American Softball Association girls recreational league teams will be forming in January.
Registrations for girls ages 4-14 will be held at Graziano's Pizza, on Desert Inn, just east of Durango from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday; from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Jan. 7; from 5-8 p.m. on Jan 12; and from 5-8 p.m. on Jan. 17.

SWIMMING
Sandpipers set new team marks
The Clark County Sandpipers had 19 record-breaking performances over three meets and recorded 751 new personal-best swims in the last month.
Turning in the most team records in last three meets was Dylan Wolf with nine. During the Sandpipers' Pumpkin Invitational weekend, Wolf set a new team record in the 11-12 boys 200-meter Freestyle (1:58.28), 500-meter Freestyle (5:22.87), 1,000-meter Freestyle (11:26.75), 1,650-meter Freestyle (18:50.88), 100-meter Butterfly (1:00.53), and 200-meter Butterfly (2:14.32).
During Wolf's record-setting paces, his teammates pushed him to those records, also breaking the old records. Those teammates were Kevin Suarez (100 Butterfly, 1:00.77) and Billy Gravley (1,650 Freestyle, 19:07.85). At the Senior Development meet, Wolf improved his records to a 5:13.74 in the 500 Freestyle 11:04.93 in the 1,000 Freestyle, and 59.78 in the 100 Butterfly.
Other swimmers breaking records at these meets were JacQueline Parrish, Amanda Guerrero, Olivia Barker and Adam Henley. Parrish broke her old record for the 6-and-under girls 25-yard Breaststroke with a time of 25.07.
Guerrero set a new 11-12 girls 200 Breaststroke record with a time of 2:40.96, which puts her within reach of a new Senior Q time. The old record was held by Erica Christianson, with a time of 2:42.64. Barker was able to set two new team records for herself in the 9-10 girls 500 Freestyle and the 100 IM.
Barker's time in the 500 Freestyle was 6:13.22, more than three seconds faster than the old record held by Helen Yee (6:16.42).
The record time for the 100 IM set by Barker was 1:11.06, slightly faster than Yee's record of 1:11.46. Henley was the final record-setter of the series, with a new 500 Freestyle record time of 5:53.49, besting Wolf's old record time of 5:56.37.
TENNIS
USTA lauds two in Intermountain
The USTA Intermountain Tennis Association gave VegasTennis.com its Media Excellence Award for 2005 and named Las Vegan Johnny Lane as the recipient of its David Freed Lifetime Service Award.
The honorees were recognized at the USTA's annual awards ceremony and luncheon on Dec. 3 in Salt Lake City.
VOLLEYBALL
Silver State Stars are holding sign-ups
The Silver State Stars Girls Volleyball Club, for girls ages 14-16, is holding signups for its team which plays from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho (behind Palace Station).
