OUTREACH

BlazeSports offers adaptive programs

BlazeSports is a sports outreach program that offers sports training and competitions for children and adults with physical disabilities throughout Southern Nevada. Play is appropriate for novices as well as elite athletes.

Youth ages 5-18 who are interested in participating can meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Charleston Heights Community School, 6438 Celeste Ave. There is no fee to participate.

BICYCLING

Festival and ride planned for Oct. 16

The Las Vegas RTC Bike Fest and Century Ride are slated for Oct. 16 at the Regional Transportation Commission Building, 600 S. Grand Central Parkway, next to the Clark County Government Center. Both events benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas.

The free Bike Fest, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include a children's bike rodeo, health exhibits and car seat safety checks.

The Century Ride consists of five routes of 22 to 110 miles beginning at staggered times starting at 6:50 a.m. Entry fees for the five Century Rides routes range from $25 to $45.

FOOTBALL

Youth league sets Saturday signups

Registration for Nevada Youth Football League is now ongoing Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon at the league office, 1651 S. Buffalo Drive (between Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard).

Interested parties should bring an original copy of a birth certificate, a utility bill and a parent's drivers license. Registration fees for players ages 6 to 14 are $160 and for cheerleaders $75. Players need to be present for weigh-in.

The league is open to players from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Green Valley, Summerlin, Boulder City and Pahrump. For more information, visit www. gonyfl.com or call the office at 437-3825.

Gladiators set to attend prep games

The Las Vegas Gladiators will again partner with KVBC-TV News 3's Operation: Football for the 2004 high school football season.

The partnership includes the Gladiators attending every Friday night football game spotlighted by Operation: Football. In attendance each Friday will be a coach or player from the Gladiators and a U.S. Army representative, giving their insight to the featured game.

For a second consecutive season the Gladiators will partner with the U.S. Army by rewarding a student-athlete for his achievements both on the playing field and in the classroom by honoring the school with the week's winning student-athlete with a donation of $250 to the school's athletic department.

HOCKEY

Outlaws offering beginner classes

The Las Vegas Outlaws will offer Beginner Hockey Classes for skaters ages 4-12 at the Las Vegas Ice Center, 9295 W. Flamingo Road.

Class times are Wednesdays from 5:10 to 5:55 p.m. Session 1 runs through Oct. 27; Session 2 runs from Nov. 3 to Dec. 15. Coast for the seven-week session is $70.

The team also will be offering a House Ice Hockey League for players ages 5-14. The league will be played at the Las Vegas Ice Center and will run from Sept. 11 to the end of March.

LACROSSE

Local league organizing teams

The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is organizing boys and girls high school and middle school level teams.

The league needs volunteer coaches and assistant coaches as well as parents to help organize new teams or to man existing teams. There also will be clinics in the fall.

SOFTBALL

Women's league recruits players

Senior Women's Softball continually recruits players for year-round play in the 40-, 50-, 55- and 60-year-old age groups.

Depending on experience and skill level there is both competitive tournament and recreational play in the league. The various teams practice and play at different times and places.

GOLF

Tourney to benefit LV Philharmonic

The second annual Las Vegas Philharmonic's Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 18 at Lake Las Vegas. The scramble format will be played on the South Shore Golf Club, the first private Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in the state.

The cost is $350 per player and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Crystal trophies will be given to the top three foursomes. Prizes also will be awarded for closest to the pin and longest drive. There will also be raffle prizes.

The shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. Check-in time is 7:30 a.m.

LVI seeks volunteers for annual event

The Las Vegas Invitational is seeking volunteers for its 22nd annual Las Vegas PGA event, to be held at TPC at Summerlin from Monday to Oct. 10.

Volunteers must pay a $25 fee to defray expenses. In return, volunteers will receive a badge for the tournament's five days as well as a season badge for a guest, coffee, donuts and lunch on volunteer days, discounts on clothing and memorabilia and participation in a special volunteer party on the final Sunday. Active military are exempt from the volunteer fee.

BASKETBALL

Sports center to hold signups

Sports Center will be holding boys and girls basketball signups for leagues for kids in grades 3-8 starting Oct. 15. Individuals as well as teams are welcome to sign up. Registration cost is $50. The league plays for seven weeks and games are played in Las Vegas. Game jerseys are included in the cost. CHAMPS registers

for fall league

CHAMPS basketball is currently taking registrations for its fall basketball league. The league is open to boys and girls. Games are played on sides of town.

Those interested can sign up individually or as a team.

BENEFIT

Light the Night walk scheduled

The Light the Night walk, to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, is scheduled for Oct. 7 at the Hills Park in Summerlin.

Participants carry illuminated balloons to commemorate lives touched by cancer.

Anyone can participate. Children, adults and seniors are all welcome. This is a casual walk with no fitness requirements. Those interested in forming a walking team or volunteering can call Beth Greco at 436-4220 or visit lightthenight.org/snv.
