Kindergarten angel

I would like to salute a very special lady for your upcoming edition. Frances Ichinotsubo has volunteered in my kindergarten classroom every day for 12 years. I feel that God knew how hectic and demanding teaching kindergarten is, so he sent me an angel as an assistant.

Frances worked with me at Vegas Verdes Elementary School for seven years because her granddaughters attended that school. Then I transferred to M.J. Christensen School. Frances now drives about 10 miles daily to work at the school. She copies and prepares books and activities for the students, plus assisting children. Frances works carefully and neatly on every task. Once a week she works at the school store during lunch.

She has taught me about the foods and cultures of Japan and Hawaii by bringing me dinner. Frances is always happy with a positive attitude. She has become my best friend and partner. This is why the children and I love Frances and salute her.

Veteran volunteer

I think I might have a candidate for your request to find special people who have done special things. My candidate is my husband of 60 years, Sherman Singer. Last Friday afternoon he was the recipient of the annual Volunteer of the Year Award presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs, VAVS, VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System at a lovely luncheon at the Gold Coast. The event was held to thank and honor all of the volunteers of the VA of which there are so many, including some in wheelchairs or walking with canes.

We moved to Sun City Summerlin 12 years ago from Long Beach, Calif., originally from Minnesota. Sherm was used to a work regimen but his age, which was 70 at that time, prevented him from being offered a job so he looked around for something he could do that would contribute to the community and fill his free time. The Veterans Clinic had that need and over the years Sherm has been active at the Clinic and O'Callaghan Hospital as a representative of our Greenspun-Radin Jewish War Veterans Post 21, which meets in Sun City. He is a past commander and now quartermaster (treasurer). He is one of the many members of our post and auxiliary who is out selling poppies, delivering used clothing and other items to various organizations, running Monday morning free coffee and bagels to veterans waiting for their medical appointments at one of the clinics, as well as working at O'Callaghan Hospital and Nellis Air Force Base every Thursday morning. And, once a month, four of us conduct a bingo game for patients in the mental ward of that hospital. It was gratifying for them to give this award to him but frankly I don't know who benefits most, Sherm or the VAVS.

In addition, our walls at home are covered with his hobby of needlepoint petit-point, which is done on a very fine canvas. Several years ago, when we lived in Long Beach, he was awarded a ribbon for our four dining room chairs at the Good Samaritan Hospital yearly needlepoint show, men's division. I will certainly understand if you have too many applicants to honor for special recognition, but I did want to tell you about my special person, my husband and the love of my life, Sherman Singer.
