If you think you might have a budding Michael Jordan or Diana Taurasi dribbling in your driveway right now, you might want to check out the upcoming Hoops For Hope basketball camp at the Doolittle Community Center in Las Vegas.
The camp, which runs from July 29-31, is presented by the city of Las Vegas Outreach Services and is the ideal forum for both parents and hopeful hoop stars to prepare for a possible future in the sport.
Fundamental basketball skills like ballhandling, footwork, shooting and setting screens will be focused on, as well as techniques to improve players' conditioning and confidence taught by both past and present Division I college players from UNLV, Tennessee, Southern Utah, San Diego State, Oregon and Utah. Power speeches will also be given to participants by college coaches Buzz Peterson (Tennessee), Terry Dunn (Colorado), Steve Fischer (San Diego State) and new Runnin' Rebels coach Lon Kruger.
Any interested parents of attendees are invited to a free workshop on July 31, where speaker and coach Terrul Henderson of Vision Sports Inc. in Houston will address a wide variety of topics, including recruitment from potential coaches for a student athlete, registration for the NCAA clearinghouse, academic expectations and conditions for junior colleges and universities, as well as preparation for PSAT, SAT and ACT tests.
Participants between the ages of 8 and 13 can register for the camp until July 19 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St. The fee for the three-day camp is $225 and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and sports bag along with a daily breakfast, snack and lunch. For additional information, call Cathy Watson at 229-2158 or log on to www.lasvegasparksandrec.com.
The camp uses all proceeds to fund scholarships for low-income youth in the city recreation programs.
