Police department's substation is open
SPECIAL TO VIEW NEWSPAPERS
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department celebrated the grand opening of its new downtown substation July 6.
The Downtown Area Command, located on Ninth Street and Bonanza Road, will serve as a satellite office for city police officers and replaces an outgrown station inside the historic Fifth Street School on Fourth Street. The school now will be converted into a cultural center.
"The location of this new facility enhances Metro's profile in the area and is more inviting and user friendly for citizens," said Sheriff Bill Young. "The new downtown substation provides the space and design to better serve the needs of this growing department."
Construction of the $4.7 million, 4.6-acre substation began about a year ago and was funded by the city. The station will serve the area bounded by Sahara Avenue, Interstate 15, Owens and Eastern avenues.
The grand opening coincided with the First Tuesday event, during which the police department opens the doors to its substations so community members can meet with officers who patrol their neighborhoods.
"This is another demonstration of the city's commitment to revitalize downtown by keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe so we can help bring new businesses and residents into our urban core," said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. "The (City) Council has made it a priority to provide a safe environment for our residents, businesses and visitors."
The Downtown Area Command also offers a Hispanic Interpreter program, with 20 part-time Spanish-language assistants.
