Access to canyon shut off
SPECIAL TO VIEW NEWSPAPERS
All land-based access to Gold Strike Canyon, which is off U.S. Highway 93 at approximately mile marker 1.5, has been closed by the National Park Service. The canyon and all land-based activities including motor vehicle travel, hiking and other uses are closed.
The hiking area leads to the Nevada Hot Springs. Area water-based activities and use of Black Canyon are not affected. The closure is expected to remain in effect until the end of the year or longer.
The area was closed because of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project construction. The precaution was taken to ensure public safety to visitors to the Lake Mead Recreation Area and construction personnel in the area.
In other Lake Mead recreation news, officials are soliciting public comments about the potential establishment of a boating navigational aid complex within the Boulder Basin. In addition, the park service may have a boat repair facility within the proposed complex.
The parks service is preparing to do an environmental study of the project. Officials will take public feedback through Feb. 23. Written comments can be mailed to Superintendent, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Attention: Compliance Office, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, 89005.
