SOCCER

Prep players, coaches honored

James Eshragh, a forward on the state champion Silverado High School boys soccer team, was named the Most Valuable Player in the Sunrise Southeast by a vote of area coaches. Eshragh broke the Skyhawks record for goals in a season with 27, breaking the school record of 21 that was set by his older brother, Mike.

Silverado coach John Cwik was named Coach of the Year in the Sunrise Southeast, and Shadow Ridge's Paul George received the honors in the Sunset Northwest. Bonanza's Gerald Kearney was the top coach in the Sunset Southwest and Chaparral's Randy Lilavois was named the Sunrise Northeast Coach of the Year.

Joining Eshragh with MVP honors for the season are Bonanza's T.J. Bombard, Chaparral's Ivan Perez and Desert Pines' Javier Astorga. Also named to the all-Southern Nevada team were Matt Baca and Barrett Farley (Centennial), Alex Penrod and Bobby Musser (Cimarron-Memorial), Roy Murillo (Shadow Ridge), Matt Lavelle and Garrett Blizzard (Bonanza), Andrew Friel and Anthony Montelongo (Durango), Jose Manzanarez (Clark), Ryan Whitesitt (Silverado), Ryan Burneo and Travis Haldeman (Coronado), Drew Chesser and Scott Shue (Green Valley), Oscar Molina and Jorge Villegas (Chaparral) and Luis Astorga (Desert Pines).

UNLV to host boys and girls camp

UNLV will putting on a soccer camp for girls and boys ages 5-15 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Dec. 20-23 at the UNLV soccer fields. The cost of the camp is $99 for those who register before Tuesday.

SWIMMING

Athlete signs to attend Purdue

Nicole Weatherman, a graduate of Las Vegas High School and swimmer for the Desert Storm Swim Club, signed a letter of intent to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., after attending the University of Alabama last year.

Weatherman was runner-up in both the 200- and 500-freestyle at the 2003 Nevada State Championships.

WALKING

Mutts 'n' Masters set for Saturday

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services Center will be hosting its second-annual Mutts 'n' Masters 5K/1-mile Fun Run on Saturday. Events include a competitive 5K Run/Walk and the 1-mile Fun Walk for all ages and abilities, with or without a dog.

Start time is 8 a.m. All events begin and end at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 North Pavilion Drive, with the 5K utilizing the Cottonwood Canyon Park in Summerlin.

Before Friday, the 5K entrance fee is $20. The fee for the 1-mile run will be $15. Registration on the day of the event will be $30 for the 5K and $25 for the walk. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.lasvegasparksandrec.com or you can register at www.clvbeyondtheneon.com or www.active.com.

Awards will be presented to the top 5K male and female finishers in each age category, with or without canines. There will also be awards for the overall male and female finishers, overall masters and overall finishers with a dog. All two-legged participants will receive a T-shirt and participation ribbon and all four-legged finishers will receive a bandana.

GOLF

City tourney set for Dec. 18

Adult golfers of all abilities are invited to participate in the City of Las Vegas Golf Tournament at 10 a.m. Dec. 18 at the Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 W. Washington Ave.

The event will offer a four-person scramble format. It is sponsored by the Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Division in cooperation with the Las Vegas Golf Club.

First-, second- and third-place winners receive awards. The $65 fee per person includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental, range card and an awards banquet with a barbecue cookout.

District 4 Little League Baseball and Softball has scheduled a district-wide signup for boys and girls ages 5-18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the clubhouse at Cashman Field, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Players are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate along with proof of residence.

BASEBALL

Las Vegas Storm takes championship

The Las Vegas Storm, an adult baseball team, won the 2004 28 Rookie World Series at the National Adult Baseball Association's World Championships held in Phoenix Oct. 5-16.

The team defeated the Dallas Diamondbacks, 13-6, in the championship game held at Tempe Stadium.

Green Valley player signs for college

Baseball player Ryan Foley of Green Valley High School recently signed a letter of intent at the University of Nevada, Reno during the early signing period.

EQUESTRIAN

Horsemanship seminar being held every day

A problem and safety seminar on horsemanship will be held daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 8790 Jake's Place in Las Vegas.

Refinement clinics are also held from 1-4 p.m. daily. Cost for the problem and safety seminar and the refinement clinic are $250 apiece, per person, per horse. The spectator fee is $20 per person, per day. Kids 7 and under get in for free.

Private horse sessions are also available for $150 per horse, per problem, per day.

LACROSSE

Local league plans signup day

The Las Vegas Lacrosse league will host Lacrosse Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the UNLV intramural fields, adjacent to Swenson Street and Harmon Avenue.

The event is for all interested middle school and high school boys and girls and their parents who want to learn more about the sport or sign up for the 2005 season. Local team reps and equipment dealers will be present.

There will be a free Positive Coaching Alliance leadership and mentoring seminar sponsored by U.S. Lacrosse for all interested coaches, officials and parents before the youth event, from 9-11 a.m. at the McDermott Physical Education Complex, Room #508, near the intramural field. SOFTBALL

UNLV camp to instruct players

UNLV is holding its 2004 Winter Advance Softball Camp for grades 9-12 on Dec. 20-22. Sixty spots are available.

Instructors will include Division I, II and junior college coaches as well as current college athletes and professional academy instructors. The program includes three days of skill instruction geared toward the serious softball player. The camp will seek to develop skills in the morning and hold mini-tournament games in the evening.

The cost is $300 before Dec. 15 and $315 afterward.

Coaches Clinic II set for Dec. 20-21

UNLV Softball's Coaches Clinic II will be held from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 at Eller Media Stadium at the corner of Harmon Avenue and Swenson Street.

Topics will focus on the aspects of fundamentals and troubleshooting flaws in softball players. The clinic will focus on three separate groups of skills per evening.

The cost for the two-day clinic is $60 before Dec. 15 and $65 afterward. Arrive 30 minutes prior to registration.

TENNIS

Association starts all-level classes

The Nevada Tennis Association has started conducting classes for juniors and adults at various area locations. The classes are for entry-level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $45 per person for the six-week session.

Classes focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.

Classes will be held at the following parks on the days listed: All American Park, Tuesdays; Angel Park, Mondays; Black Mountain Recreation Center, Tuesdays; Bruce Trent Park, Thursdays; Bunker Park, Saturdays; Duck Creek Park, Mondays; Morrell Park, Tuesdays; Mountain Ridge Park, Saturdays; Paul Meyer Park, Thursdays; and Thurman White Middle School, Saturdays.
