An angel

among us

I know a really special person who personifies going way above and way beyond the call of duty.

Dee Redwine not only lends her hand and her heart, but also her home.

For eight months this past year, Dee opened her home to a quadriplegic veteran and his caretaker mother, Dean and Valerie. The two were not relatives or even close friends of Dee's. In fact, she didn't even know them until the city mission called her one day hoping she would help the couple find a place to live.

Dee is involved in a lot of outreach programs in the valley, and she knows the resources and programs available to help people in need of shelter, food and clothing.

Dee searched high and low for a place for them to live. She asked everyone she came in contact with if they knew of an inexpensive apartment with handicap facilities. Dee is a very resourceful and determined woman, yet after a few months of searching she was unsuccessful in finding them a home.

So, Dee, with support from her husband, Jerry, opened their own small home to the couple. They moved a lot of furniture around to accommodate Dean's wheelchair. Dean is in and out of the veterans hospital due to his compromised health. Dee was constantly there to accompany them to doctors' appointments, even helping them use the city bus system since they didn't have a handicap van for transportation.

Dee provided everything for the couple, yet she explained to me that Valerie deserved all the praise for the way she cared for her son.

I must admit that those of us who are close to Dee thought she was a bit crazy to give of herself in this manner. Even with this extra burden at home, she never stopped volunteering and leading the outreach programs she is involved in.

Dee is always cheerful, always a cheerleader for others, and has the largest heart and greatest touch. She is a shining example of service and we need more people like her who are willing to give of themselves in extraordinary ways.
