Favorite Sons & Daughters



View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Please include the name of the area high school and year graduated. Robert C. Hansen, Navy Airman Recruit, recently graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Hansen's division (#139) was awarded the Hall of Fame trophy at graduation. This award is presented to the division displaying outstanding test scores, teamwork, physical fitness and attitude, and is an award highly coveted by other graduating recruit divisions. Having completed additional training in Pensacola, Fla., Hansen is now assigned to the nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, home ported in San Diego, where he will complete his apprentice training program and enter his career field. Hansen is the son of William Hansen and Nancy Hansen. He is a 2000 graduate of Mojave High School.

Jamil A. Penn, seaman apprentice, son of James A. and Marcia M. Penn of Summerlin, recently graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During his eight-week training program, Penn completed a variety of naval training that included naval customs, water safety, firefighting and survival techniques in addition to shipboard and aircraft safety. This resulted in his Division 203/Ship 05 being one of the honors divisions at graduation. Penn is a 2003 graduate of Palo Verde High School.

Brandon C. Upton, Senior Airman, United States Air National Guard, and an active member of the Clark County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, completed Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio last October. He has continued his training as a C-130 crew chief at Little Rock AFB. Upon his return home in May, he worked for the city of Las Vegas as a lifeguard and plans to attend college. Upton is currently assigned to the 152 Mission Support Flight in Reno that recently deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upton is the son of Sandra Moody-Upton of Las Vegas. He is a 2003 graduate of Palo Verde High School.
