KARATE

Local students qualify for Junior Olympics

Three students from the IKO Karate class qualified in the Region 13 Qualifier in Mission Viejo, Calif., and went on to compete in the AAU Junior Olympics July 28-31 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The three are Erika Dorsey, 12, who took the gold medal in the Junior Olympics last year in fighting, her brother Chase Dorsey, 9, and Jordan Burruel-Smith, 10.

SOCCER

Grant will expand program in area

The US Soccer Foundation announced a $14,000 grant will be given to the Boulder Dam Area Council, BSA, in Las Vegas.

The "Two For One" project will use the funds to help expand its soccer program to more disadvantaged Hispanic youths in the Las Vegas area.

Rainbow league seeking players

Registration for Rainbow Youth Soccer League will be held Saturday and Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Desert Breeze Community Center. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 3 1/2-15.

Fees are $85 for under-5 to under-10 divisions and $95 for under-11 and older. The fee includes a full uniform, picture package and an end of season tournament for all players.

New players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and league fees. Returning players need to only bring league fees.

Registration can be done Monday through Friday in the league office. Anyone interested can call our full-time office administrator at 932-0715 or visit the Web site at www.rainbowyouth soccer.com.

Vegas Virtue Cup to be held in August

The second Soccer Resort 8-on-8 Vegas Virtue Cup is scheduled for Aug. 27 and 28 in Summerlin. The tournament is open to men's, women's and coed teams.

Each team is guaranteed four games and the registration fee is $299 for women's and coed teams and $350 for men's teams. Those interested can call (718) 433-2452 or visit soccerresort.com.

BASKETBALL

Fall league to start on Sept. 11

The Nevada Basketball Association's Fall Basketball League is slated to start Sept. 11. Games will be played on Saturdays at Christ the King Church, Garside Middle School or Home Courts in Henderson. Teams will play a minimum of eight games.

The cost is $115 per participant (includes uniform top) or $550 per team (uniforms not included).

Club team sets tryouts for Aug. 28

TBA Club Team basketball tryouts are slated for Aug. 28. Tryouts at Christ the King Church will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. for 5-8 year olds, 11 a.m. to noon for 9-11 year olds and from noon to 1 p.m. for 12-15 year olds.

Tryouts at Home Courts in Henderson will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. for 5-8 year olds, 4 to 5 p.m. for 9-11 year olds and from 5 to 6 p.m. for 12-15 year olds.

CHAMPS searching for fall participants

CHAMPS basketball is currently taking registrations for its fall basketball league. The league is open to boys and girls and has sites on both sides of Las Vegas. Those interested can sign up individually or as a team.

Fastpitch league sets registration

The Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association/Southwest's ASA fastpitch softball league has scheduled registration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the West Flamingo softball complex, just west of Jones Boulevard.

NewStart benefit event set Aug. 27

The eighth NewStart Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the NewStart Home for Women is scheduled for Aug. 27 at Aliante Golf Club. Team pre-registration is $100 per person and $400 per team. Registration on the day of the tournament is $150 per person and $600 per team.

LVI seeking volunteers for annual tourney

The Las Vegas Invitational is seeking vounteers for the 22nd annual Las Vegas Invitational to be held at TPC Summerlin from Oct. 4-10.

Volunteers must pay a $25 fee to defray expenses. In return, volunteers will receive a volunteer badge for the tournament's five days as well as a season badge for a guest, coffee/donuts and lunch on volunteer days, discounts on clothing and memorabilia and participation in a special volunteer party on the final Sunday which includes fabulous door prizes. Active Military are exempt from the volunteer fee.

UNLV camps to teach fundamentals

UNLV is hosting two baseball camps for players ages 10-18 on Aug. 12 and 13. The cost for one of the camps is $150 and the cost for both is $225.

The Beat The Heat Pitching/Catching Camp will be held from 9 a..m. to 1 p.m while the Beat The Heat Hitting Camp will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. The camps will be held at UNLV's Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Las Vegas Hawks looking for players

The Las Vegas Hawks 12-and-under club baseball team is looking for players for its fall season.

Future Star camps open to beginners

The Nevada Tennis Association's Future Star Summer Camps start this week. The camps are open to beginners ages 7-12. Space in the camps is still available even if players miss the first day of practice.

Group offering coaches clinic

The Nevada Tennis Association is offering a free high school coaches clinic and tennis players training camp.

The coaches clinic is slated for 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the UNLV Tennis Center. The players training camp will be instructed by USPTA/PTR certified pros and are intended to help coaches and players get ready for the upcoming tennis season.

FOOTBALL

Youth league sets Saturday signups

Registration for Nevada Youth Football League (NYFL) is now ongoing Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon at the league office, 1651 S. Buffalo Drive (between Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard).

Interested parties should bring an original copy of a birth certificate, a utility bill and a parent's drivers license. Registration fees for players ages 6 to 14 are $160 and for cheerleaders $75. Players need to be present for weigh-in.
