LEARN honors education supporters
The Local Educational Admissions Representatives Network (LEARN) honored community representatives during its inaugural appreciation luncheon, held at Regis University's Henderson campus. LEARN awarded the representatives for their involvement and support of higher-education programs within their individual organizations.
Honorees included Janine Drake of Desert Springs Hospital, Patty Duffy of Citibank, Candace Somers of the City of Henderson, Michele Birtch and Beatrice Prenson of the New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Georgia Willis and Holly Connor of the Bureau of Reclamation, Barb Frasier of Sunrise Hospital, Deborah Prettyman of Nellis Air Force Base, Dan Krugel and Sharon Lindberg of Sierra Health Services, Robert Taylor of Desert Springs Hospital and Liz Montilla of Valley Hospital.
Formed in 1995, the LEARN consortium consists of both public and private higher education providers in the valley and includes: University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Regis University; Nevada State College; Community College of Southern Nevada; University of Oklahoma (Nellis Air Force Base); Emby-Riddle Aeronautical University; Midwestern University; Nova University; and University of Phoenix.
ACTIVITIES
City sets up various summer events
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled numerous activities throughout the month. Information is subject to change. For more details call the city at 565-2367 or TDD 566-2710.
Jazz quartet Groove Illusion is scheduled to perform a free outdoor concert at the Justice Court Park, located at 243 Water St. at the northeast corner of Water Street and Basic Road, at 8 p.m. Friday.
The Bitty Beach Party is scheduled for Saturday at the Henderson Multigenerational Pool and on Aug. 2 at the Black Mountain Pool. Each little swimmer event, which includes games and music for those 7 and younger, is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Admission is $1 for children and $2 for adults. Slides will not be open during the event.
On July 26 at 7 p.m. the Tony Marques Band is scheduled to perform poolside at Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road.
GOVERNMENT
City council, planning
commission to meet
Henderson City Council is scheduled to have a quarterly comprehensive plan amendment (land use) meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a session on July 24 at 7 p.m.
City meetings are held at City Hall, 240 Water St. Those interested in obtaining a council agenda call the city clerk's office at 565-2057 or for a commission agenda call 565-2474.
