Metro Showcase
tryout scheduled
The Metro Showcase baseball tryout is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Las Vegas at the Arroyo Grande Baseball Complex, Field No. 9.
The event is designed to showcase high school aged players, who will each be evaluated and have a scouting report sent to college coaches and professional scouts.
Each player at the event will also get the chance to try out for the Metro Stars Traveling Team. Those interested can call Brian Kaplan at 419-5300.

Audience scorecard
designed for matches
A North Las Vegas resident, Chris Hatter, has designed an audience scorecard for boxing matches.
The cards feature information on the fighters, rules for keeping score and are available in English and Spanish.

Henderson league
seeking players
The Henderson Softball Association, for ages 40 and older, is accepting registration for its fall season.

Clubs schedule
free agent camp
The Las Vegas Wranglers, along with the Bakersfield (Calif.) Condors and the Fresno (Calif.) Falcons, have scheduled a free agent tryout camp Sept. 5 and 6 at the Santa Fe Station Ice Arena.
Camps are slated from 6:30 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. both dates, as well as from 9:20 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. Sept. 6.
Attending players will have the chance to earn an invitation to the official 2003-04 training camp of any of the three East Coast Hockey League clubs, which will start play in October. Participants in the camp must be at least 18 years old and provide a playing resume, which should include any previous teams, statistics and personal information.

The Jewish Community Center has scheduled youth and adult fall bowling programs, a combination yoga/Pilates class and more.
Bowling, which will take place at the Suncoast Bowling Center, is slated to start Aug. 28. The yoga/Pilates classes, which will start Sept. 9, will take place at the Veteran's Memorial Leisure Services Center.

Henderson signing up
for basketball, softball
The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its fall adult basketball and softball leagues.
Registration is accepted from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, at the Sports Office, located at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.
Fees for basketball are $300 per team and fees for softball are $425 per team. Those interested can call 434-4131.Nick Green, a recent Valley High School graduate, earned a golf scholarship to California State University, Chico , a nationally ranked Division II school. Green medaled 10 times for the Vikings last season and qualified for the state golf tournament the past three years.
The 6-foot-4 Green also helped lead the Vikings to the state basketball tournament last season.
Gregory Memorial
tourney set for Aug. 28
The fourth annual Ann Gregory Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 28 at the Stallion Mountain Golf Course.
The event, hosted by the Urban Chamber of Commerce, will also feature an awards banquet at The Venetian Resort, along with breakfast, lunch, a fashion show, gifts, awards, contests and more.

plans annual event
The Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS has scheduled its 16th annual golf tournament, to benefit Habitat for Humanity and HELP of Southern Nevada, Sept. 15 at the Silverstone Golf Course in Las Vegas.

Palm Valley sets
special event
The Palm Valley Golf Club grand re-opening and breast cancer charity golf event is scheduled for Sept. 13. The $100 entry fee includes prizes, contests, three beers and a buffet lunch at the Summit Restaurant. It's $25 for the buffet lunch only.

Volunteers needed
for LVI tourney
Volunteers are needed for the 21st annual Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament.
All volunteers, who must be older than 18, must pay a $25 fee to defray expenses, but in return they'll receive a volunteer badge to enter the event all five days, a season badge for a guest ($50 value), donuts, coffee and lunch, discounts on clothing and memorabilia, special promotions, admittance to a party after the final round and more.
The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 8-12 at TPC at Summerlin, TPC at The Canyons and the Southern Highlands Golf Club. Those interested can call Michele Morphy at 242-3008.

Flag league
seeks youngsters
The Henderson Youth Flag Football League is still accepting players, boys and girls ages 11-14.
The league is open to players from across the valley and the NFL youth program features individual NFL team uniforms, player practice T-shirts, a 10-game training season, season-ending tournament, a girls-only division, a girls cheerleader program and more.
The season runs from September through November and the registration fees are $80 for football and $100 for cheerleaders. Family discounts are available.

BASKETBALL
Summerlin NJB
to register Sept. 6
The Summerlin National Junior Basketball League has scheduled registration from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 6 at the Willows Community Center, located at 2775 Desert Marigold Lane; and from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Gardens Community Center. A birth certificate and proof of residency is required.
The league is open to players in grades one through eight and the registration fees range from $100 to $150 per player. Each additional sibling can register for $100 each. Those interested can call 615-5286.
Champs accepting
players for fall
Champs youth basketball is now accepting registration for its fall basketball leagues. The leagues are open to players of all skill levels, in grades three through 12. All games are announced, there are halftime shootouts and trivia contests and MVP and Champs awards for every game.
The national director is Steve Boyack, head coach at Cimarron-Memorial High School, while the local directors are former high school coaches Thad Simmons and Tom Hughes.
